This hybrid walking-and-bus tour begins in the Historic District with a stroll through Madrid's most famous plazas. First, visit the Plaza de Oriente, which is lined with statues of 44 Spanish kings from the Medieval period. Then tour Plaza Mayor, a grand square built during the Habsburg period and located only a few blocks away from yet another famous plaza, the Puerta del Sol. That site contains the famous clock whose bells mark the traditional eating of 12 grapes at midnight on New Year's Eve for prosperity in the year ahead. Finally, see the Royal Palace circa 18th Century that is today used for state ceremonies and official banquets.

El Escorial

The Escorial is the most important architectural monument of the Spanish Renaissance. It is said to be a pristine example of how architecture, painting, and sculpture of the Renaissance come together in a composition of such unified splendor.
