NEW BRUNSWICK -- The New Jersey State Bar Association today commends Governor Chris Christie and Senate President Stephen Sweeney for the bi-partisan effort that led to today’s announcement of a candidate to fill the six-year-old vacancy on the New Jersey Supreme Court, said NJSBA President Miles S. Winder, III.
NJSBA President Miles S. Winder III released the following statement:
“We applaud our elected leaders for putting aside politics to preserve the independence of our Judiciary, a co-equal branch of government and the crown jewel of our democracy. The compromise also averts what in a few short weeks would have been a true judicial emergency. With an existing 44 vacancies on the Superior Court bench and the threat that an additional 23 judges up for tenure would have been held up as a result of the impasse over the Supreme Court nomination, litigants across New Jersey would have found the courthouse doors closed. On behalf of the legal community in New Jersey and our state’s citizens, we urge the Senate to expeditiously hold hearings in order to provide the necessary advice and consent for the nomination of Walter Timpone to the Supreme Court and for all judges who are nominated for reappointment.”
The New Jersey State Bar Association is the state's largest organization of judges, lawyers and legal professionals. It was founded in 1899 and has over 18,000 members
